How To Test Tungsten Carbide Rotary Burr

carbide burrs

Tungsten Carbide burrs are rotating tools used for removing materials. These are used by the metal fabricators and engineers for sharping, cutting, chamfering, grinding, drilling, and shaping their materials.

It is also known as High-Speed Milling Cutter and Mold Milling Cutters.

These burrs are used worldwide by workers for removing sharp edges from materials, doing different drilling tasks, and increases production efficiency.

They are best suitable when working with a different kind of metal as it has an extreme hardness. These burrs are long-lasting and perform best when used in high pressure.

Many online and offline distributors are selling the best quality rotary burrs. But it is important to select the right high-quality burr for your business to perform the task properly.

These rotary burrs are distributed into different categories according to various methods.

  1. According to the method of clamping and driving the workpiece, its inner and outer circle is divided into two categories.
  • Centering Grinding
  • Centreless Grinding
  1. According to the relationship between feed direction and machined surface:
  • Longitudinal feed Grinding
  • Transverse feed grinding
  1. According to the type for grinding wheel surface:
  • Peripheral Grinding
  • End grinding face mill
  • Peripheral end meal

The rotary burrs comes in various sizes and shapes for different cut purposes. Like:

  • Carbide Ball Burrs: Used to create a concave cut or to give the shape, hollow cuts out on the area of the materials
  • Carbide Tree Burrs: Suitable to make rounding off edges and creating a concave cutting on the materials.
  • Carbide Cylinder With End Cut: Best for creating contour finishing.
  • Carbide Inverted Cone Burrs: Used to make V-cuts and rear side chamfering.
  • Countersink Burrs: Ideal for making acute angled areas, bevelling, chamfering, counterboring, and bevelling.

The selection of shapes and sizes of the burrs depends upon the job and the material cut which you needed.

They also comes in variety of ranges and each ranges gives special benefit to use. Some are:

  • Bolt remover range: Best for removing broken studs from materials.
  • Universal Range: Ideal for general purpose metals such as copper, iron, steel, and nickel
  • Steel range: Specialize to cut steel
  • Inox range: Best for Stainless steel
  • Miniature Range: Useful for doing fine detail work and engraving
  • Alloy-Specific-:Ideal for aerospace or aviation industry as it has varying shapes with certain metal alloys.

How To Test a Tungsten Carbide Rotary Burr

Tungsten Carbide rotary burrs are used for a variety of materials. These materials include gold, silver, marble, cobalt, titanium, steel, aluminum, bronze, wood, zinc, fiberglass, platinum, nickel, and many more.

Many Rotary burrs are used for shaping and cutting some specific materials. Like smaller burrs are used for smaller applications and larger burrs for larger applications. Because when these burrs are used on soft materials, then they are not broken at all.

Tungsten Carbide rotary burrs is a high-speed rotary tool, which works on manual control. So, its feed rate and pressure depend on the tool life and cutting results.

Hence, before starting manufacturing process, companies tests all the raw materials in terms of its density, hardness, and TRS before using it into the product.

And every piece of the product goes through the in-process and final inspection test to ensure the quality control.

After manufacturing, every carbide rotary burr companies check each burr before selling it.

Hence, all these burrs need to go through various tests before sending it. If these burrs pass all the test conditions perfectly then, they will be distributed to all the distribution channel.

Types Of Test

All Rotary Carbide burrs need to go under three types of test to check its efficiency, before selling it to the distributor.

      1. Grinding test:

  • The company’s fabricators or workers carry carbide burrs and start a grinding test. They test these burrs on hard and soft materials.
  • Firstly, they grind the hard materials, and if they get a positive result, then the workers go for a grind of soft materials.
  • If this test damages burr or soft material, then this burr will not be used.
  • Otherwise, If, these tests grind soft materials perfectly, we will go for the next process.

     2. Cutting Test:

  • Workers test these burrs by cutting soft and hard materials.
  • So, they make lines on different materials and cut it one by one along with the line to test its cutting criteria.
  • If these burrs cut each material perfectly, this means these burrs are competent for cutting.

      3. Sharp Edge Test:

  • During this test, workers check the burrs by removing sharp edges from different kinds of materials.
  • These materials include aluminium, zinc, fiberglass, steel, wood, cobalt, and many more.
  • If the burrs remove the sharp edges perfectly and smooth the material surface, then the burrs clear the test.

If all these three tests are cleared competently, this means, these burrs are perfect to use in every way and they are sent to distributors for selling.

Techniques For Using Tungsten Carbide Burrs:

Here are some points which you must consider before using rotary Burrs. As carbide burrs requires bit care to get better results and make your burr work long-lasting.:

  • Do not put high pressure while cutting materials. As it reduces the life of rotary burr and becomes smooth prematurely.
  • The speed should be gradually increased and should not exceeds 35000 RPMs.
  • Keep the burr moving around the cutting area. Because if the burr remains still for long period it can cause clogging and stops it from digging. And also gives a rough work by leaving marks on the material.
  • Avoid using new burrs on hard materials.
  • Don’t use fine carbide burrs on soft materials.
  • Ensure you material or is secured tightly on the bench you are working.
  • During grinding, don’t forget to clean chips on the cutting teeth of rotary burrs with a steel wire brush.

Remember to wear goggles or face shields, canvas gloves, and long-sleeved overalls while working with Rotary burrs to avoid any kind of mishappenings.

Why Use Tungsten Carbide Burrs?

These burrs are well suitable for different kinds of materials, as they come in different shapes and sizes.

Along with this it also has other benefits like,

  • Used at high temperatures
  • Best for grinding, debugging, removing, shaping any kind of materials
  • Long-lasting
  • Removal of High stock
  • Ideal for using on any kind of hard and tough materials.

Who Uses Tungsten Carbide Burrs?

Carbide burrs are mostly used by engineers or fabricators for making tools, model engineering, jewellery making, chamfering, welding, casting, deburring, grinding, sculpting, wood carving, and others.

And these are mostly used by the dental, stone, metal sculpting, aerospace, and automotive industries.

Mostly rotary burrs come in four cuts:

  • Single Cut Carbide burr
  • Aluminium Cut Carbide burr
  • Double/Cross Cut Carbide burr
  • Diamond-Cut Carbide Burr

Single Cut Burr: It is mostly used for heavy material removal, deburring, milling, and cleaning. It has a right-handed up-cut spiral flute. They are usually used on hardening steel, copper, cast iron, ferrous material.

Aluminium Cut Burr: It has a single right cut spiral flute. These are used for cutting aluminium alloys, plastic, or other Non-Ferrous materials like copper, magnesium.

Double cuts Burrs: These are the most popular used cuts which are useful for most applications. It has more cutting edges and also removes material faster.

These are used on soft steels, ferrous, non-ferrous materials, aluminum, and other non-metal materials such as stone, plastic, ceramic, and hardwood.

The double-cut burrs give a slightly smoother finish as compare to a single cut. S it produces smaller chips.

Many companies used these burrs for medium-light stock cleaning, finishing, creating small chips, and stock removing.

Diamond-Cut Carbide burrs: It is universal tooth cutting style. As it has high cutting action and smooth working.

These are made of staggered teeth. Which provides a very smooth cut, faster removal of metal, and more cutting edges.

These are used for hard materials like stainless steel, titanium, cast iron, alloys, ceramics, hard rubber, fiberglass, and ferrous metals. It provides light stock removal, fine finishing on material, fine deburring, and light stock removal.
